Pixel Watch Won’t Charge or Turn On? Try These Fixes

What to do when your Pixel Watch won’t charge, stops at 80% or won’t turn on: the right charger, seating it, moisture, Battery Defender, restarts and repair.

Quick Answer

Remove your Pixel Watch from the charger entirely, then place it back so the charging points line up with the charger’s pins and the crown points the right way. Use only the charger that came with your watch, and wipe the watch and charger first if they’re wet. If it stays at 80% or less after 4 days or more on the charger, Battery Defender may have paused charging: remove the watch and place it back to charge past 80%.

Common causes

  • An improper connection between the watch and the charger
  • An incompatible charger or cable, including reverse wireless charging from a Pixel phone
  • Moisture on the watch or charger
  • Battery Defender pausing charging at 80% after the watch stays on its charger for days

Step-by-Step Solutions

Work through these steps in order, starting with the charger and how the watch sits on it, and move on to restarts only if the watch still shows nothing.

  1. Step 1: Check the battery level

First see whether the watch is charging at all.

If your watch is on, swipe down and find the battery level next to Settings.

If your watch is turned off and has been charging for at least 10 to 30 minutes, press the crown to check the charging status.

  2. Step 2: Use the charger that came with your watch

Each Pixel Watch model charges only with its own included charger.

Google says to charge your watch only with the charger included in the box:

    • Pixel Watch 4 and 5: the Quick Charge Dock.
    • Pixel Watch 2 and 3: the USB-C fast charging cable.
    • Pixel Watch: the USB-C magnetic wireless charger.
    Good to know

Reverse wireless charging from Pixel phones isn’t supported. On Pixel Watch 1, 2 and 3, other chargers might not work and could damage the watch. Pixel Watch 4 and 5 show a notification if the charger is unsupported.

  3. Step 3: Remove the watch and place it back correctly

A watch that isn’t seated properly won’t charge, and you should get a notification about it.

Remove the watch from the charger entirely. Then place it back so the charging points on the watch line up with the pins on the charger.

Pixel Watch 4 and 5: place the watch on the Quick Charge Dock with its crown facing up. Clear the area around the charger so the watch can rest properly in the dock. These models alert you if the charger is misaligned.

Pixel Watch 2 and 3: line up the 4 points on the back of the watch with the 4 pins on the charger, with the crown facing the same direction as the cable. The watch fits only one way and won’t charge if it’s placed the wrong way around.

When the percent charged shows on the screen, the watch is charging.

    Good to know

Make sure the back of the watch is clean and the charging pins aren’t stuck or damaged.

  4. Step 4: Dry the watch and charger first

Google says not to charge your watch while it’s wet.

Wipe the watch and the charger before you charge your watch. Pixel Watch 4 and 5 alert you if they detect moisture.

  5. Step 5: Leave it on the charger and watch the screen

If your watch hasn’t been charged in more than a day, the charging screen can take longer than usual to appear.

If your watch hasn’t been charged in more than a day, the charging screen may take longer than usual to appear. If the screen stays blank once the watch is properly seated on the correct charger, let it charge for 10 more minutes.

Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5: after about 8 seconds, a lightning bolt icon should appear. After about 35 seconds, press the crown to show a low percentage. After 7 minutes, the colored “G” icon appears while the watch starts up and keeps charging.

Pixel Watch: after about 1 minute, a lightning bolt icon should appear, and after about 2.5 minutes a low percentage. After 5 to 15 minutes of charging, long press the crown to turn the watch on. The colored “G” icon appears after 7 to 16 minutes.

  6. Step 6: Restart charging if it stops at 80%

Battery Defender pauses charging when the watch stays on its charger for a long time.

If your watch stays on its charger for 4 days or longer, Battery Defender pauses charging to protect the battery. If the watch stays at 80% or less, Battery Defender may be on.

To charge past 80%, remove the watch from the charger and then place it back.

    Good to know

When Battery Defender turns on, you should get a notification when you wake the watch or pick it up from the charger.

  7. Step 7: Restart or hard reset the watch

If the watch won’t turn on or stays unresponsive, Google suggests a restart, then a hard reset.

To restart, press and hold the crown for 3 seconds, then scroll down and tap Restart.

If the screen is still unresponsive, do a hard reset: press and hold the crown and the side button for about 35 seconds or longer, until the “G” logo appears. The watch should restart shortly.

If that doesn’t help, try the hard reset again while the watch is connected to the charger.

    Good to know

Your Pixel Watch doesn’t have a physical reset button.

  8. Step 8: Keep your watch up to date

Google’s troubleshooting for a watch that won’t charge includes a firmware update.

Make sure your Pixel Watch firmware is updated.

Pixel Watch still won’t charge or turn on?

If you’ve tried all of these steps and your watch still hasn’t reset, contact support. Pixel Watch 4 and 5 have repair options for in-warranty and out-of-warranty damage, and mail-in or walk-in service depends on your warranty status and where you are. If you’re outside the countries and regions Google lists for repair, contact Pixel Watch support for repair options. To check your warranty status, go to Your Devices. You need to be in a supported country or region and signed in to your Google Account.

Don’t poke the pins or mic hole: Don’t insert any objects into the charging pins on the back of Pixel Watch 2 and 3, or items such as paper clips into the mic hole. If you send your watch in for repair, back up your data and do a factory reset first, because a factory reset erases all your apps, settings and data.
